Crew Member of the Month: Mia!

How does it feel to be Crew Member of the month?

It’s very exciting! I didn't know there was a Crew Member of the Month, so this is very fun.

What program do you volunteer with? Why?

After-School Homework Help, because it worked with my schedule and it seemed fun. I liked that it is more of a regular thing, so you can build relationships with the students.

How long have you been volunteering?

Oh, gosh. Since the first week of Homework Help this year. (Note from the Crew: Mia has logged 27 hours of volunteering this semester!)

What's your favorite MOI memory?

Oh wow...probably the first time I worked one-on-one with one of the older students, and we worked on a big project. He was so thankful and happy. It was so great to see him so thankful—it was the first time I felt great about what I was doing and saw the impact. I really felt reaffirmed.

What's your favorite dessert?

A cannoli, which is a Sicilian dessert. It's fried dough filled with cream, and my family makes them. I like the traditional kind, which is pistachio with ricotta.

If you were an ocean creature, real or imagined, what would you be? Why?

Maybe I'd be an octopus, because they're very elegant, and kind of mysterious, and they take up a lot of space. They take up space with their tentacles, and I take up space with my voice. They have a presence, too, and everyone knows about them.

What was your favorite book as a K–12 student?

I loved The Giver. That was the first time I was introduced to well-known literature. I was in middle school, and it got me excited about reading. I loved the plot twist—I won't tell you what it was, but it was good. But don't watch the movie, I've heard it's not as good as the book.

When you're not diving deep with us at MOI, what do you do?

Typically, I'm studying. I'm studying industrial and organizational psychology, so the psychology of groups of people, like corporations. I'm a college student, so there's not a whole lot I've gotten myself into other than that. Or I'm calling home to see how my family is doing.

If your life were a book, what would its title be?

I've never thought about this—my mom knows hers, but I don't know mine. It would probably be Loud, Proud, and Lots of Frizz.

What's your favorite writing prompt?

I would say, "my most embarrassing moment that made me laugh the hardest was when…" because I think it's good to laugh at yourself and appreciate those moments.

When asked what else we'd like to share, Mia explained that she really just wanted to get the word out about our programs, and what we do. She said she tells her friends about MOI and they plan their meals around her volunteering, because it's a priority. She loves us, and we love her! Thanks for your support, Mia!
