After years of planning and growing, our crew is joining the 826 Network! Our center is now named 826 MSP, but our store, where you can purchase student anthologies and other merch to support our free programs, will remain Mid-Continent Oceanographic Institute. We can’t wait to tell you more about the amazing work of the acclaimed 826 Network!
826 National is an organization centered around amplifying youth voices through free writing, tutoring, and publishing programs. All 826 programs look to involve students, teachers, and communities in their work. 826 believes that through writing, students can expand their creativity, learn about who they are, appreciate each other and themselves, and succeed academically. Each center has after-school tutoring programs, in-school publishing projects, field trips, and writing workshops--just like us! 826 MSP will be the ninth chapter in the network, joining eight other major cities throughout the United States serving approximately 78,000 students annually at their chapters and online via 826 Digital. Learn a little bit more about each of the unique 826 operations below.
Founded in 2002 by educator Ninive Calegari and author Dave Eggers at 826 Valencia St., these two had a mission: to help teachers and connect volunteers with students in the neighborhood who needed help with their writing. The space they wanted was zoned for retail, but looked sort of like the front of a pirate ship--there, the Pirate Supply Store was born. The success of 826 Valencia developed into the creation of the 826 National network, and now there are eight other chapters with the same mission: help students write creatively and effectively. With the Pirate Supply Store’s wild success, 826 Valencia had to expand. First they opened King Carl’s Emporium, then, in 2019, they opened Woodland Creature Outfitters, Ltd in Mission Bay. Now the Valencia chapter of 826 serves over 8,000 students with the help of over 1,500 volunteers every year. Check out some fantastic student voices here.
Young authors spend some time in the fourth dimension at The Time Travel Mart when they visit 826LA. Supporting over 9,000 students in Echo Park and Mar Vista, this chapter empowers the students of LA through writing and publishing. Time will fly when you check out their Student Writing Gallery here.
With two locations, Liberty Street Robot Supply and Repair Shop & The Detroit Robot Factory, 826michigan has been working hard since 2005. Along with many of the same programs as other chapters, 826michigan offers extra help for English Language Learners as well. Check out some featured student writing here.
Working with 4,000 students and 150 teachers every year, The Greater Boston Bigfoot Research Institute works hard to help students find their voices and tell their stories with in-depth publishing programs. This chapter works with over 700 volunteers regularly! Find ingenious, peer reviewed student writing available here.
The New Orleans Haunting Supply Co. offers six different programs that all end with publication. They also work closely with teachers and some of their projects even involve their entire community! Be brave, and check out some of their student work here.
